What is Bubble-U-Boeuff?
"Bubble-U-Boeuff" is the phonetic approach of a great world leader's name when your dental condition has, for some reason, been reduced to zero.
For reasons beyond explanation, it's also the name we, five 5 musicians from the south-west of the Netherlands, gave to our mission: Improvise on one another's improvisations with moving pictures as an inspirational extra diversion.
While using a rather traditional instrument line up, we play the most diverse sorts of musical atmospheres, inspired by the projection of movies.
There isn't any particular musical style: seventies psychedelic, funk, acid jazz, electro, minimal, reggae, ambient, underground; whatever seems suitable to play along with the film. So it's not all that avant-garde all of the time.
The use of movies
We use movies as a source of inspiration to improvise upon, because they can produce an atmosphere without sound or knowledge of what it's about, so we can create our own, new environment for it, and so create a new environment for any listeners or viewers, who thus will....etc.
We have jammed to a great variety of movies, and the impact on our playing and use of our instruments is surprising ourselves continuously.
The best impact is given to us by movies that are colourful, have a strange composition and a decent dose of absurdity. As if in a setting of strangely moving lights.
The drive
The particularity of Bubble-U-Boeuff is summarised in the phrase
NO MORE COUNT DOWN, WE'VE ALREADY STARTED!!
With their own personal techniques and instruments everyone tries to move the music and find their own spot into the music playing around them, discovering all the possibilities of your instruments. The results are always surprising, always different but although the sound of Bubble-U-Boeuff is very diverse, it is very recognisable as well.
Recordings
Approximately 90% of live the improvisations are recorded and edited. There is no overdubbing afterwards. The editor cuts the tracks to make them publishable, but also complete jams are put on CD, in which no editing was needed or could be done.
The first albums are recorded on a 4-track analogue recorder. Madam Sadam and later albums are recorded on a hard-disk recorder. All results are published and available on CD. On the music page you can find loads of downloads.
Guest musicians
Many musicians have jammed with Bubble-U-Boeuff and, though sometimes unaccustomed at the beginning, they turned out very enthusiastically in the end. Musicians are welcomed as long as their instruments and/or playing styles add something to the Bubble-U-Boeuff-concept.
